Putting what we leant into practice

At the North Shore Power Squadron, learning to navigate the waters isn’t just about theory; it’s also about putting that knowledge into action. That’s why, as part of our CPS Boating 2 and 3 courses, we offer an exciting and practical experience known as the Student Cruise. This engaging activity allows our students to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom, and it’s a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in real-world boating situations.
What is the Student Cruise?
Towards the culmination of our Boating 2 and 3 courses, our dedicated members generously volunteer their time and boats to facilitate the Student Cruise. The students are divided into small groups, and each group is assigned to a skilled skipper. This setup offers a safe and interactive environment where students can test their knowledge, enhance their skills, and boost their confidence on the water.
Navigating with Precision:
During the Student Cruise, students use cutting-edge tools like “Navionics” and traditional nautical charts to plot a course based on specific questions provided. This exercise challenges them to apply their navigational skills, taking into account factors like tide, wind, and current. Skippers then follow the instructions given by the students, creating a dynamic and engaging learning experience.
The Thrill of Learning:
What sets the Student Cruise apart is the sheer thrill of being out on the water, applying classroom knowledge in a real-world setting. It’s a fantastic day that not only provides valuable practical experience but also highlights how much can be learned in just three hours from highly skilled and experienced skippers. The confidence gained from successfully plotting a course and guiding a boat through the waters is immeasurable.
