Basic Navigation Boat Handling
Basic Navigation Boat Handling
The CanBoat North Shore offers Basic Navigation Boat Handling in a combined course. The course is twelve weeks duration. You can register for the course as a Classroom Student or as an On-Line Student. Weekly classes are held at Sutherland Secondary School and are Zoomed out to our on-line students in a Simulcast, interactive presentation.
The simulcast presentation allows both classroom and on-line students to access the course from anywhere over the internet while away on vacation or while away for work. This is a popular feature of our more advanced courses.
Boating 2: Beyond Boating Basics
If you are starting out, the ‘North Shore Power Squadron B2 & B3’ no longer exists, but for the equivalent, you would take both Boating 2 and Boating 3 and we’ve combined them into one course to keep things simple.
Boating 2 is presented as a combined course with Boating 3.
The PCOC makes sure you have immediate navigation and safety skills but it’s just the beginning of what you should know when you get on a boat.
In the second of our Boating Series, you are introduced to the art of navigation, anchoring, ropes, lines and knots – not to mention what to expect when the boat is moving under power. As we all boat on the West Coast, the CanBoat North Shore’s course also has a number of additional topics that will be taught
These include:
- Stern Tying
- Emphasis on Tides & Currents;
- Winter and general maintenance
Suggested Prerequisite: Boating 1 – Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)
Students will meet in a classroom one evening per week for six weeks. Printed or eBook course material will be distributed to the students either on the first night or prior to the start of the course.
Boating 3: Introduction to Marine Navigation
Boating 3 is presented as a combined course with Boating 2.
The third course in our series explores navigation further as you learn how to plot and label on paper charts as well as what the skipper should be doing before setting out and when under way, handling a boat under sail as well as your environmental responsibilities and electrical hazards.
This course enhances your navigational skills and prepares you for your first trip to more distant destinations such as Desolation Sound and beyond. The CanBoat North Shore will take you out on the Student Cruise toward the end of the course.
The Student Cruise is where you put all your new navigational skills to the test. Students will act as Navigator on Volunteers’ Boats for the morning cruise in Vancouver Harbour. The cruise is great fun and a chilly lunch follows.
Suggested Prerequisite: Boating 2
Students will meet in a classroom one evening per week for six weeks. Boating 3 Continues immediately following Boating 2. Printed or eBook course material will be distributed to the students either on the first night or prior to the start of the course.
