Near Shore Marine Navigation
Boating 4: Near Shore Marine Navigation
Boating 4 is the former ‘Seamanship’ course (now called ‘Near Shore Marine Navigation level 1’) and is a very practical follow-up to Boating 2 and 3. Our Students really enjoy this one and we enjoy teaching it. This is a challenging course where boat deviation is included in navigational calculations.
Do you know what to do if a boat on fire calls you for help? Can you deal with emergencies on your own boat? Build your confidence on the water, and make your boating a safe and fun experience, by taking this CanBoat-NautiSavoir Course. You will learn how to cope with these situations, as well as many other aspects of boating, such as single point fixes, relative bearings, knots and splicing (Marlinespike), medical emergencies, coping with adverse weather, and much more.
You can register for the Ten-week course as a Classroom Student or as an On-Line Student. Weekly classes are held at Sutherland Secondary School and are Zoomed out to our on-line students in a Simulcast, interactive presentation.
The simulcast presentation allows both classroom and on-line students to access the course from anywhere over the internet while away on vacation or while away for work. This is a popular feature of our more advanced courses.
The CanBoat North Shore will take you out on the Student Cruise toward the end of the course. The Student Cruise is where you put all your new navigational skills to the test. Students will act as Navigator on Volunteers’ Boats for the morning cruise in Vancouver Harbour. The cruise is great fun and a chilly lunch follows.
The Course covers topics such as:
- Medical Emergencies
- Bearings and Fixes
- Marlinespike
- Emergencies at Sea
- Tides and Currents
- Wind Waves and Current
- Collision Regulations
- Buoyancy and Stability
